Ropes and nets close up!....

....It was a lovely day on Sunday, so on the doctor's orders I went out for a walk and arranged to meet Richard, the organiser of "Seafest" ....an event happening in Scarborough on the weekend of the 16th & 17th July where I will be exhibiting some of my maritime influenced work.

Total scorcher....

and along the Southside there was even a VW rally they all looked fab and I even managed to see spiderman driving one!

 I took the opportunity of looking up close at some of the things on the marina that we take for granted....the details make them look like a piece of abstract art...

These rubber riggs - often recycled tyres look great against the netting 

 

 

... coiled, twisted, knotted ropes of all thicknesses some colourful and nylon some deteriorating, rotting and gnarled with age... 

I took this photo looking through a porthole and as I walked away saw a security guard - very smart I may add! - heading towards me....I smiled and he shook his head and wagged his finger...on closer inspection the boat was foreign and quite impressive....smiling again I said sorry and wandered off....oups!

I was trying to look for some new inspiration for some work over the summer and the ropes looked amazing, the different techniques used to create them and their uses.

Anyway, an hour in the sun and heat was enough for me! so I popped down to see a friend launch their new dinghy along the marina - now that takes patience! and then wandered back home. 

Studio clear out is much needed before I can attempt to do any more work!

This picture was the result of an afternoon out along the Yorkshire wolds on a walk called "Centurion way", but there is a story behind it!....
As I was walking along, stopping periodically to take photographs, I was following the paths but at one point I had to cross a field,  unbeknown to me it was full of very curious cows! As I started to cross the field out of the corner of my eye I spotted them as they suddenly took an interest in me!, of course it had nothing to do with the bright red t-shirt I was wearing!  the cows started to trot then canter then one particular cow set off towards me running flat out.... I was about 25m from my exit and at the point of no return, so I started running towards the exit but the tons of beef were gaining on me . Running at top speed I would have beaten the 100m sprint champion, so with my  trusty camera on my tripod in my left hand, and my lunch  (sushi that day by the way!) in the other hand  plus with  my heavy camera bag backpack on I vaulted the gate using only my finger tips to grasp the gate,  I cleared it diving better than a premiership football player, I landed on my backside but the camera was fine and this fantastic photograph was taken..........but  with the dreaded knowledge I had to return the same way later!!

The Menacing type of cow in question in mono, looks sweet but don't be fooled...............very dangerous
and certainly runs fast,...............but not as fast as me!

getting rusty!

so after a week of feeling I must get on I have finally started doing just that!
I thought I should try and recapture the rust in oil paints as my husband went and bought me a lovely present of a selection of oil paints....he did make me laugh when he told me he had bought the basic colours...I said the primary ones he said yes although he struggled to remember them all?....so he proudly  recited the poem "Richard of York...." it did make me laugh when I saw the rainbow of colours he had bought me in both normal and fast drying oils!....It's just lovely to be bought such a thoughtful and much needed gift, thanks Mr Mainprize.....

so ....I tried to roughly capture the essence of the marks and tones.....I think I might have to practice mixing the colours a bit better, it has been a while since I've used oils but I thoroughly enjoyed using the pallet knife again...anyway here a couple of attempts...

I must be honest and say how hard I found it to get the texture....I'am going to try using acrylics with some modelling paste and see how that goes....but I had to have a go using my trusty sewing machine...I printed the image onto some canvas and have just started to embroider onto it, I've also cut out layers for another piece so will post them later in the week....

...so far this is my favourite and I've only just started it!

...anyway...

I'll keep at it and see how they pan out....

now what?.....

....1 month project!...

So this week has seen a change in my mood....furtive and anxious....its really reflected in my work too! I've tried not to let things get me down...life's too short....but redundancy and looking for new jobs is starting to take its toll!...even though I am testing the waters with my own work....its still stressful...anyone who doesn't get nervous before an interview or presentation must have nerves of steel!!

I went to see my niece's  Fine Art foundation Exhibition......I was totally blown away by how good her work was, her statement was very personal and really touched me.....her work was about skin cancer and how it effects people and their relationships.....it was ephemeral and yet had such strength about it, sadly I can't show you any photos as she had an interested buyer so I'd better not! It was not just Hope's work that was fantastic the standard of work was amazing, I felt humble and a bit lacking to be honest........

...so back to the drawing board it is! 

I know I want to focus on pebbles for my 3rd and final year but I am trying to line up a few exhibitions for over the summer so I need work that I can use now.....so over the next month I have set myself a challenge of using some "rusty" photos as a starting point!....

....here are some of the photos....

the marks are great, the colours deep and warm...I have a thing about markings!...

...taken from a sea defence wall the rusty photos just look great, so I'am off to experiment with oils, tyvek, and basically anything I can get my hands on!

I might possibly layer fabrics, burn bits and even have a go using melted wax...the possibilities seem endless at the beginning of a project!

...inks on foil might look good along with heat guns to distort...

....sketches in pastels might be a starting point! might even see if I can find something similar nearby and go and try some frotage! 

over the next week I'll be researching artists who paint, use, create rust or elements of decay in there work...

....would love feed back if you have any good ideas!

Costume degree photos

last batch or photos from Yorkshire Coast College - affiliated to Hull University - Costume degree show .....great to see them being modelled in such a fun way and sooooo professional too. A good friend of mine thoroughly enjoyed being one of the Macaroni's.

Love the evening and the costumes.....just a taste of some of the many designs created...

As promised some more Fine Art  Degree show photos from Westwood campus for this year. I can't believe how packed the Friday evening was....you could barely move. Everyone there was soooo supportive of the students , it was really lovely to see....

these are some of Carmen Mill's exhibition space pieces....this piece was made of  3 sections -  possibly about 5 meters long, in a wave formation, undulation contours just like the land with layered markings.....very clever and very effective...

...I took some photos of her small sketches that I really liked in black ink but they sadly didn't turn out, however, I managed to save the rest of the photos thankfully!... here is some more of her work...I love the way she uses earthy colours in various hues along with lines, patterns and shapes....

...I must confess I sneaked in after the exhibition had finished and took some more photos as my first ones were rubbish....well not rubbish there were too many people around to photograph the work properly!

Lauren Ward's work was also still there so I took some better pictures of her work too! my favourite  is this one....I find myself trying to recognise shapes and images from within the composition!

...and this one is approx 2 m wide and had its own little section!...

Its clever how the direction and layers of the materials is constantly changing.

Hey up...it's been a hectic week so far! I foolishly thought that life would be a bit more chilled when uni for this year came to a close....how wrong was I!!!

since returning from our little jaunt to Lyme Regis it seems to be non stop and go, go, go!
On sunday we went to see Elton John....not my most all time favourite of artists, he is a legend and he was playing at Scarborough Open Air Thertre which is almost at the bottom of our street....so why not!
He played for 2.5 hours solid just him and his piano....must admit he was excellent and still really knows how to pack a tune!...

Thankfully it was a lovely evening so hopefully he will recommend the place to his fellow music buddies!

So after that I have been to get advice about starting my own business, really helpful actually and managed to get a few freebies to help me on my way! I can't believe I was encouraged to start using "Twitter" have set it all up but not really sure if its me as such....but will persevere and continue. I would like to put the app on to my blog but have no idea how!!!

I've even started to design my own website....I am sure it will change over the next few months but all being well it will go live by the weekend so watch this space!

I also got my results for the last semester at uni....whoop thankfully I passed averaging a good 2:1, so next year If I really pull out all the stops I am aiming for a first!...I feel there maybe a few tears and tantrums but it will soooooo be worth it. I think and hope everyone else in our year passed ok too which is good as its a really good group and we all seem to get on ok.

....So after some discussions with my tutors its all steam ahead and I think I will base my dissertation around the use of textiles within fine art and  also how  history can effect the creative outcome of a piece of work....well something to do with those issues. ..........and for my studio practice I am going to base a lot of my work on pebbles, their shape, markings, history - concerns about coastal erosion....using and incorporating textiles and mixed media!..here's some photos that I particularly like from last week....

...just as a thought...I find it really hard to move the images I select on the page  so if you sometimes think they look randomly placed thats why!!! so as you can see I have loads to start with!

...so its research, sketch and apparently look in depth at more artists....oh happy holidays!
